Sofia Aviles
This is a love letter to Chavalas Lindas - Abuelita, Dora, Ika, Noeli – Matriarchs who raised me, who overcame homelessness, exile, crisis and adversity. I carry their devotion forward. The project borrows its title from Luis Pastor’s pop song, "Nicaragua, La Chavala Linda” (The beautiful young woman) and explores Nicaraguan culture beyond a political map. I create ephemeral altars to la griteria in Doral, fritangas in Madrid, coffee beans in Paris, and other manifestations of Nicaraguan culture abroad. It is a story of cultural presence, of a refusal by a community to be confined by space or time and a declaration of what we bring to the world.
